THE SOZO SCORES
Opening this huge box of archives from the passed 15 years of SOZO visions in motion contemporary dance studies was the initiating act of producing a collection of memories in text and picture and the resulting scores for creative readers.
Sixteeen years ago a brave act of “vision in motion” happened. I said to the world, “Who wants to come and learn with me?” The answer of some other very brave souls was the birth of SOZO.
This gallery is a collection of the photographs that captured “SOZO” for me as I sorted for so many hours files and files of footage from the last 15 years. There is a picture for each day of my 8 month research (243)
The research spread its roots widely into the earth of SOZO’s history and following actions, directions and collections were taken.
The daily writing of morning pages for the first 3 months as a practice of writing and emptying or “downloading”
The collection of memories in writing simply called “I remember…” They were written down whenever I had a strong memory of a moment in the last 15 years that moved me to capture it on paper, lest it be forgotten. They are as yet still in the order of how I wrote them down and not in a timeline.
The creation of a small solo “spoons”, mentored by Antje Pfundtner and in a “raw studio state” has been shown to fellow artists in Kassel only. It served as an opportunity to look at and question my role as a host at SOZO, the symbol of the “SOZO SPOON” and the humor of sentiment.
The creation of a group piece for a current first year SOZO class who looked at some of the oldest archive videos with me and co created something of an “anarchiving” process or a feeding forwards from old personal experiences of past students to new and personal ones. working title was “leave no traces”
Compiling a list of all graduates so far and tracking down email contact. These 58 graduates were asked the following questions. “What are you hosting in your life right now?” and “What impacted your journey after SOZO the most - what part of school life or school philosophy, which principles or certain situations come to mind?
A general combing through of all archives in my way. Hours of watching trailers and videos made by teachers, mentors, students, and myself. Observing daily life NOW at SOZO. How is if different? What has changed? What does each new class bring? What are hard times and what are good times? How did it happen that young amazing people came from Germany, Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, Poland, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Russia, Ukraine, Italy, Spain, Greece, Israel, Algeria, Syria, Indonesia, Vietnam, Korea, India, Brazil, Columbia, Cuba, USA, and Canada to experience and contribute to our community.
